UNITED KINGDOM AUTHORIZE THE ASSISTED REPRODUCTION OF THREE PEOPLE WITH DNA.

16/02/2015

United Kingdom has become the first country to introduce laws to allow the creation of babies with DNA from "three persons" to prevent inherited mitochondrial diseases.

Mitochondria ara intracellular organelles that provide esential supply of cellular energy. Defective mitochondria ara passed down only from the mother. They can lead to brain damage, muscle wasting, heart failure and blindness. So a donor woman's mitochondria might stop the disease.

The technique consists on midifying version of IVF which combines the DNA of the two parents with the healthy mitochondria of a donor woman.

Any child born through this technique would have DNA of three persons. The 99.9% of their DNA would come from their parents and only 0.1% from the donor.

Although this new has had a huge impact in the Medias, there is not a genetic modification in this technique because there is no alteration of the nucleus and the gens of parents.

With this impact in the Medias, TV3 interviewed Anna Veiga Scientific Director of the Reproductive Medicine Service. Hospital Quirón Dexeus. Barcelona, who said that it is always a good new trying to avoid important diseases.

Also the program of TV3 " Divendres" interviewed Phd. Carles Gimenez co-director of preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis in Reprogenetics Spain. GIROFIV collaborates with this center in cases of PGD. (min: 1h.46 min.)
